Aerian – Hindsight EP

Aerian – Hindsight EP

It wasn’t that long ago that I was given the honour of writing up a review for Aerian’s old skool epic trance track "Reach", and now Menno Meijer is back with his new release entitled "Hindsight".

There’s always an issue of not being able to top your first releases, especially when two of them are as good as "Evenfall" and "Reach" are, but Aerian’s managed to do it. "Hindsight" is much the same as "Reach" in that it returns to the epic roots of trance when speedy, powerful synths and a higher BPM were the norm.

In the Original Mix there’s a wonderful guitar solo break down with subtle eerie synths in the background, before a melody that starts off quiet and gets progressively louder begins, leading up to the main drop of pure euphoria. Once started, the high powered melodies don’t stop and the guitar comes back into play, this time both playing off one another creating untold amounts of energy.

All great releases deserve a great remix, and when you have Darren Porter remixing one of your tracks, you know it’s going to be cracking, and he hasn’t disappointed. A more progressive start is terms of melody, but still with a high BPM, Darren builds up energy as opposed to getting stuck straight in there like the original. The guitar is more subtle, but the drop is heavier. The bass feels stronger and the synths are much more powerful. A gentle, wide spread piano riff sits behind the main melody, not taking anything away from the main focus of the track but adding a touch more emotion.

If all that is just too much for you and you fancy something slightly more progressive, or even laid back, then Rick McAlister’s remix is here to make sure all needs are catered for. There’s far less emphasis on the epic style melody and drop, it’s far more subtle and takes on some tech house influences. It’s what I’d call a set starter, whereas both the Original and Darren Porter mixes are peak time anthems.

Verdict:

I don’t like to compare artists to one another, but just this once, I will. Think Menno de Jong, Virtual Vault, Dave202 and the old sounds of the world famous Tiësto. That true pounding trance sound that got us hooked into this amazing genre. Aerian may not be as well-known as them in terms of name, but his productions are just as big. "Hindsight" is without a doubt one of the biggest tracks of the last decade.

Make sure you head over to Aerian Records right away and buy all 3 mixes, trust me, you won’t regret it!

5/5
