Interview with Madelin Zero
Pin ItGrandest welcome on Trance Hub! Madelin Zero – what a beautiful name! To begin with, what does your name mean?
It really doesn’t have a hidden meaning. But I love it because it fits me. Names should let people shine.
Majority of trance vocalists come from a different singing background – perhaps, it’s difficult to switch to other genres than trance? Is it true that trance is the genre one can easily take on to, like you are an opera singer yourself?
Singing in any genre is mostly about knowing your voice, being comfortable in your skin, and not being afraid to take chances. You also need a healthy dose of luck.
Some of the DJ-vocalist collaborations are heaven-sent. If you agree to this statement, then who is the perfect DJ you worked with, and why?
Well, since you said Heaven-sent, I have to say Markus Schulz. The reason is that since 2005, I have really been watching this guy, thinking he has a great ear, and a great style that stands out. His work with Departure on the song "Without You Near" was brilliant. It still sounds as good today as it did the day it was released.
In 2005, I never imagined that Markus would support my work one day and that I would release songs on Coldharbour. So when I see him up there mixing "Another Day", the lyrics flashing on the screen for the whole world to sing along to, I can’t describe how it makes me feel.
Okay, so a lot of people won’t know that you were the voice for a couple of tracks in ATB’s ‘No Silence’ like "Black Nights" and "Collides With Beauty" in 2004. A classy album, and even a classier era gone by… and suddenly you’re back in limelight with great hits with Adiva and DNS Project. Did you go through a transition phase in this gap?
Absolutely. After all the traveling I did with my band Circ and then immediately recording the MZ artist album, I paused my career for a bit. I launched my fashion line Some Is Enough by Madelin Zero. I focused heavily on that for a couple of years. I also left New York City and moved back to Orlando to be near my family.
It was the song with Coastline, "Alone With You" that really inspired me again musically. It made me remember how much I love it. The best things in life always come to you when you aren’t chasing them.
Do you remember the feelings when ATB contacted you to do a song?
Oh yes. I actually knew very little about EDM at the time. Andre saw me on MTV in Germany performing "Destroy She Said". He more or less recruited me. I wouldn’t be here today if it weren’t for him. It was really cool that we got to work together in his studio in Bochum. I will never forget that experience. It was perfect. Andre had a big smile on his face the entire time I was singing. My performance really fed off of his positive energy. I think, as you said, it was another time.
Your track "Envy" is just WOW, could you take us through the lyrics of the song?
Thank you. "Envy" is a song about frustration. The lyrics are questioning true love and wondering if it’s a myth. My favourite line in the song is: "You seem to pass right through me on your way somewhere else." How many times does it feel like love in the beginning of a relationship and then one person (or both) lose the feeling. Ugh. Very confusing this love stuff. Good thing we all have music to pull us through.
All the time I want you,
All the time I want to hear you say that you care,
But you’re not there…
All the time I hunt you,
Follow you home,
Fly on the wings of a prayer,
But you’re not there…
Love, what are you doing to me?
You seem to pass right through me,
On your way somewhere else,
Love, when will you discover,
I feel you like no other,
Envy…
Talk to me,
Your words sound sweet,
They fill me with envy,
They turn my heart green,
Talk to me,
Your words sound sweet,
They fill me with envy…
How necessary is it to look beautiful as a vocalist? Because people tend to treat vocalists as life-saving angelic figures – and that’s true. Don’t you agree?
Wow, I don’t know really. If someone has a beautiful voice, it doesn’t matter to me what they look like. But yes, I agree that vocalists are the most beautiful women in the world. Everyone knows that. ;)
Okay we’ve already seen the imagination and creativity put in your official video for "CIRC – Destroy She Said", if given a chance, which song of yours would you choose to make a video. Take us through a picturesque description…
I see "Another Day" being shot on a sunny beach filled with beautiful happy people in the summer. And then in the same location in the dead of winter on a rainy gray day. I am always fascinated by popular vacation spots in the off season. I went to Niagara Falls once in the middle of winter. All the ice cream shops were closed down and boarded up. You could see that the place was built for masses of people but no one was there. Something about that was so creepy and the imagery was so powerful. It is a bit like the end of a relationship, which is what "Another Day" is about.
What do you prefer focusing on? Lyric writing or singing?
Both are as necessary to me as breathing. They exist alone and they exist together. But when you are a new singer emerging on the scene, the best songs are usually not offered to you. They are reserved for the big names. So if you can write your own material, you will have many more opportunities. The great thing about the genre is that it is always in need of new emotional material. There are no limits on what you can do.
Anything you would like to tell us on your upcoming projects?
Ryan Farish and I licensed two tracks to Audi for the 2012 A8 campaign. I am eager to see what they do with the song "Disappear". Pretty exciting. I have also been writing with Sean Tyas for his artist album, which has been an awesome experience. Working too with Khomha. My predicition is that he is going to become an even bigger phenomenon than he already is. This business is so much fun.
