Interview with Lange
11th August, 2008Hi Stuart! Trance Hub is obliged to have you here. How are you doing?
And where are you looking forward to play next?
I'm very well thank you! My next event is Ruby Skye in San Francisco. I always enjoy playing in San Fran; Great crowds!
What would you like to say about your new radio show 'Intercity'?
The show is broadcast every 2nd and 4th Wednesday on Afterhours.fm. As with most shows it's my opportunity to share with listeners my favourite tracks but I've also tried to give it a different slant. On each show I 'visit' a different city, interviewing a resident DJ or promoter, usually one I've met on my travels, so it enables me to give an insight into some of the places I've toured.
Where has the late '90s' trance disappeared? The tech / electro element seems to be a part of most of the tunes produced today.
How has Trance evolved over the years?
Yes trance music has definitely changed over the past decade. There's no denying there were a lot of great and memorable records made back then, but strangely I think it's difficult to recreate that kind of feeling in today's trance. It's almost like it was a moment in time, not to be repeated! The scene has blended quite a lot with house and progressive in recent years, which for me has meant I've remained excited about being in the studio.
Do you think you are going to use your alias 'Firewall' in the future?
"Sincere" is an ultimate tune that teleports us to some other world. What can you tell about the vocals used in it?
Maybe! Now are you referring to "Sincere For You" or "Sincere"? There was a lot of confusion surrounding a vocal mix of "Sincere". "Sincere" was only released as an instrumental but a vocal 'demo' got leaked by mistake. The vocals in question were sung by Kirsty Hawkshaw, and used on "Sincere For You" later on.
You have had a legendry presence in dance music industry for more than 10 years. How would you define the 'Lange' before 10 years and now?
Thank you for the compliment! Lange, 10 years ago was quite naive. I was new to the industry, didn't know anything about the business side and just worked on music in the studio. Lange today has adapted to the immense changes of the music industry in that time. The workload is much bigger and more varied with running a label, DJing (and all the traveling), and the new radio show. In fact I struggle to find the time to work in the studio some weeks!
Why did you title your debut album 'Better Late Than Never'? It would be really interesting to know this.
It was a personal joke at myself for taking so long to make my first album!
A DJ is also a globetrotter. Tell us about some of your favourite venues where you have enjoyed spinning.
I enjoy playing in many cities, some recent favourite events have been in Singapore, Seoul, Honolulu, Guatemala, and also the Sunrise Festival last weekend in Poland!
So what it really feels like playing before a crowd of 25,000 trancers?
It is an experience that very few people can get.
I just got back from the Sunrise Festival where I played just before Tiësto to a crowd of around 15,000. It's quite a strange experience... obviously you can't ever see everyone so anything over a few thousand is not much different. You can really feel the energy of the crowd though when they like the track!
Which one for you is easier - remixing or producing? You are a master of both though!
Remixing is easier simply because you have starting elements. With a remix you have a melody or vocal to start you off so it's easier to make quick progress... the restriction is actually helpful! I have too many ideas for tracks but not enough time to make them all and part of the problem when producing your own tracks is deciding which ones to spend your valuable studio time on.
What artists are currently playing in your iPod?
At the moment I seem to be spending most of my time listening to promos and demos! So most of what I listen to is trance or house. I don't actually carry an ipod when I travel, and quite often when I'm driving I will do so in silence to give my ears a break!
You have collaborated with great vocalists in beauties like "Songless", "Out Of The Sky" and "Follow Me", which other vocalists would you like to collaborate with?
I can't think of anyone at the moment, other than I hope to work with Sarah Howells again soon. Her "Out Of The Sky" vocal is something special!
What can we expect from your studio in the near future?
The new single is about to be released with new mixes of "Out Of The Sky". I've remixed the next Kyau & Albert single and have another project I'm just finishing off now. Also my label has a few exciting tracks coming up in the Autumn so look out for a fresh burst of new releases later in the Year.
Message for your fans.
Thanks for all those who continue to listen to my tracks, performances and now radio show! There was big support for my album too which makes this all so worthwhile. I hope to meet more of you at future events!
Trance Hub is greatly thankful to you for this interview. We will highly anticipate your music in the near future.
