Interview with Sean Tyas

Hi Sean, first of all let me welcome you on Trance Hub and wish you a very Happy New Year! 2010 has just ended. What did it bring for Sean Tyas?

Well, it’s definitely an interesting year, since the start, I suppose the biggest thing, to me, was taking my show & podcast, Tytanium Sessions, into a weekly offering. This has surprisingly led to a LOT more work each week, but I think the payoff has been amazing. The proof of that being that I actually had to change my entire host, as I was kicked off my previous one for having too much traffic as we are now up to 19,000 official subscribers through iTunes alone!

The other huge highlight gig-wise was Trance Energy playing b2b with Simon Patterson. We went out there and really just had the time of our lives.

We would like to know the turning point in your career and struggle (well, there’s for everyone) to become what you are today!

I had moved to Germany in 2004 to do basic to intermediate studio stuff there. But being alone in that environment 5-6 full days a week, not speaking a word of German yet at that point, and barely have any money to my name, that really just left me with only one thing to do: learn to get better at production. These 10 months of time there in Cologne, Germany really led to everything.

Let’s talk about the nature of your tracks; well they can definitely produce enough energy to run a nuclear reactor! How would you define your style?

My late teenage years were spent as a BPM-hungry candy raver. As a result of that, I’m always looking to bring the energy. But I really think it is so important to have great melodies & harmonies. If one can succeed in generating energy with the melody alone, imagine how powerful it gets with the drum tracks to back it! That’s the basic mentality I take…

You’ve just come out with your massive new compilation ‘Tytanium Session "Alpha"’! Tell us how ‘Tytanium’ started in the first place and what is the belief behind this compilation?

I guess the whole concept of Tytanium Sessions started with my combining several of the shows I was doing on different internet stations into one streamlined & unified brand. I was running Phased Out Phriday, Frequency Friday, and the Wednesday Whistle oll on different sites, and it really just became unruly, and a bit pointless, as each month a lot of tracks would overlap making some sets very similar. So to solve this, I decided to re-focus on a new concept. Spend more time on EACH show, speak more about the tracks, and properly promote it. Tytanium Sessions was born.

You’ve just toured Dublin and Edmonton. The memories are afresh; what would you like to share about it with us?

Dublin for me is ALWAYS a pleasure. I have certainly been there enough times to have built a really solid group of friends there I really enjoy catching up with and simply having a great night. This was no exception, with the added benefit of the Subculture night being absolutely packed to the brim! Edmonton was also awesome for New Year’s Eve. Played a cool spot called the bank, and the people on the floor definitely showed me what the scene in Edmonton was all about, definitely very up for whatever I wanted to play, and they had the energy to keep up. Thrilled when it’s still full at the last track.

I’m sure you would have seen so many artists come to India last year and you were here too in 2009. How do you assess the crowd and the market here?

I LOVED it. I did a 4 city tour: Mumbai, Pune, Delhi & Bangalore. The most interesting thing was how each city differed so much from each other, IN the club and OUT. I really enjoyed to see the country (a 4 city tour makes that so much easier), meeting so many new faces, and having great chats with really clued-up people. Each city I could notice it was a slightly different type of crowd, and sometimes even a different style of how they danced!

What is integral to make a gig a successful one? Also, would you prefer music fans or ID junkies?

I think it’s the same answer for both halves of that, I prefer a crowd that is somewhere between psychotic & dramatic. It’s all about reaction and that keeps me going…

What would you do when you play before a crowd who doesn’t know your music at all?

I probably would choose to play the specific tracks that helped build my career in the first place… the ones that people come up to me and say "you know, -track name- got me into this" or "hey, -track name- got me back into trance". The latter there is an AMAZING thing to hear.

Keeping the track of the top 3 trance radio shows currently, most of your productions are considered as the featured tune. That’s quite excellent! How do you hit the bull’s eye every single time?

2 rules really! Melody & Power. If it’s going to be a proper trance track, it’s gotta have 110% of each of those. If not, I just spend longer on the work until it IS what I consider it to be that 110%.

Probably a question every single Sean Tyas fan wants to ask: When will you produce your own album?

Already have begun! :) I FINALLY have decided to get it begun and it’s off to a decent start, as far as amount of projects started. It’s actually a bit liberating because now I have over 10 projects to pick from each day when I walk into the studio and wonder what to work on…

You’re clearly representing the high energy, deeper, synth-rich side of trance music. Do you think a vocal bomb is waiting to come out of your way?

A couple of them actually are underway. I’m actually so excited about them I may just release one without waiting for the album to be done first.

Message for your fans:

So many of you have been with me since the beginning of all this, before Tytanium Sessions, I want to thank you form the bottom of my heart for believing, and feeding me the motivation I really need to keep this up!

Trance Hub thanks you for taking out some time for this interview. We wish you all the very trancing best this year!
