Interview with Cosmic Gate

Hi Nic! Hi Bossi! Grandest welcome on Trance Hub and a Happy New Year! What’s Cosmic Gate currently cooking in their melodic kitchen?

We started working on the first beats and pieces for a new artist album to be released later in the year, but it is too early to talk about it here more closer.

What do you think people love seeing the most: Nic behind the decks or Bossi behind the decks, or both?

We think it’s always different for people when there are two guys behind the decks compared to the one regular DJ, and Cosmic Gate simply is a project from two people, so for 95% of our gigs we also DJ together.

Somewhere after 2007, and after remixes of ‘Tiesto feat. JES – Everything’ and ‘Veracocha – Carte Blanche’, do you think your sound developed into aggressive monsters with Godly bass-lines, worshiped by fans on the dance floor? When do you think Cosmic Gate’s sounds underwent a contemporary makeover?

Our sound actually always developes from time to time, simply as we don’t like to produce the same all the time, we always put in new pieces to current productions comparing to the one before, of course every year or period has its special kind of sound, but some small changes together make a difference already after only a small period of time.

‘Back 2 The Future’ is one album where we come across hit varieties of tunes sprayed with Cosmic Gate’s essence. What would you like to tell us about such a concept that’s taking a toll on everybody’s speakers?

The idea behind ‘Back 2 The Future’ started when we still liked to play the old tracks in our DJ sets, but the sound/style from these early works of ours simply didn’t fit the feeling of our current sets anymore! Out of these reasons we decided to first do some new versions ourselves for some festival events. Seeing the great reactions from the crowd on these new mixes and people asking for these new mixes over and over again, we thought maybe its time to rework the old tracks, and make a whole CD for the fans. The result with remixes from the likes of Rank 1, Wippenberg, Markus Schulz, Arty, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Alexander Popov, Robbie Rivera to mention only a few, you can find on ‘Back 2 The Future’. A nice gimmick for every Cosmic Gate fan, no matter if you like 1999 or 2011 style. ;)

We have noticed your collaborations with Wippenberg, be it the unforgettable "Guess Who", or his recent remix of "Fire Wire". What would you like to tell us about teaming up with him?

We know him already for so many years, and for us he for sure is one of the best producers in the whole EDM scene, so it was a big pleasure to work with him, and past co-operations with him sure have not been the last ones!

I personally feel that your collaboration with Tiff Lacey in "Should Have Known" illustrated some of the best emotions trance music can ever portray. What led to making such a beautiful tune with beautiful lyrics?

We always produce a demo with beats and melodies, send it to the songwriter, and it seems that Tiff’s voice and our music simply fit very good together fortunately, that’s why we also teamed up with her again for "Open Your Heart", one of people’s most fave tracks from our album ‘Sign Of The Times’.

Would you rather bring people on their knees with a high-energy, deeper, trancier set, or destroy them with grungy hooks and massive bass-lines?

Pretty easy, we think both fits and make a good set, a good set needs different styles to not be boring, so both kinds of music are important to us.

We have across a lot of producers with their moniker as ‘Cosmic …’. Have you guys ever come across such instance where someone mistook your identity?

No, actually not, even as when there is an act around for many years to use half of the name and just put something else with it tastes a bit weird, but this happens with a lot of things and not only to us, we see such things as compliments and just go on not being bothered actually…

A Golden question for you both: What makes Cosmic Gate one of the longest lasting duos in the scene? And what would be your words of wisdom for the existing and up-and-coming duos?

Every duo has to find its own kind of way, what works for us does not mean to be working for other duos as well, it always should be about the music and as long as the musical understanding is there things will work, as it does for us!

Message for your fans:

Thanks a lot for the support, and we see you guys hopefully soon in one club in your area!

Thanks a lot for gracing Trance Hub. We wish you all the best for 2011 and do continue with your lovable global tremors!
